Oh Scrap! : More Zipper Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am sure some of you have been wondering where I have been all week.  First, I had a bad cold.  Then, there was a Board Meeting that required a bunch of my time both before and after the meeting. I have also added some longarm quilters.  That always takes a lot of my time to get them quilt tops and set them up as a volunteer.  Time just really seems to fly lately!

I did find some time to sew a few more zipper blocks.  This quilt is really struggling to come together.  But I am not giving up ...

Oh Scrap! : Zip It! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have finished all my donation scrap quilts so I thought it was time to start another one.

We have a shelf in the Many Hands and Many Hearts warehouse (formerly my home office) that holds the larger scrap chunks.  I pulled some blues, pinks, greens and purples that I thought might look nice together.  Lots of florals and lots of tone on tone.

I thought I would make a zipper block.  These blocks measure 8.5 x 10.5"unfinished. My plan is for every block to have blue in it.  I also want a floral and a tone ...

Oh Scrap! : Quilt Top from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Boy, once I get focused on something, it doesn't take me long to get it finished.

I posted a few blocks last Sunday, and now it is already a quilt top.  I used a bunch of backing scraps for all the fabric.  That is why long and narrow pieces worked so well.  I am really happy with how it turned out.  I should finish piecing the backing today and hopefully get it quilted up this week.  I am so pleased with how many scraps I was able to use up.  The blocks are 8" so this will be a ...

Good Bye 2024! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It is time to say goodbye to 2024.  It was a crazy, unexpected year for me and I think I am ready for it to end.  I am really looking forward to 2025.  Many Hands and Many Hearts should be an official 501c3 in a couple months and I know that is going to be fun to see.  I love my board members and all of them are enthusiastic and ready to see MHMH grow.

Here are a few more random finishes to close out the year.  Janet played with some lime and turquoise blocks.  Nann sent in this white ...

Oh Scrap! : Florals from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

With all the quilts we make for Many Hands and Many Hearts, we end up with a lot of "chunks" of fabric.  Most of these come from backing leftovers.  These "chunks" get piled onto one of the shelves in our storage area and then I try and find ways to use them.

Lately, I noticed there were quite a few florals up there.

I decided I would make a chunky quilt top with them.

I quickly cut some 10.5" squares, some 5.5" squares and then a couple 10.5 x 5.5" rectangles for every block.  Twenty blocks ...

Oh Scrap! : First Time Sewists from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am still meeting once a month with a few of the young girls in my neighborhood.  They are helping me with various tasks and learning skills to become a quilter.  This week, we moved on to sewing.

Remember the 4.5" squares I cut out of my scrap bins?  They are going to turn them into quilts for Many Hands and Many Hearts.

Here are their first attempts.  I think they did amazing.  After sewing their first column and seeing how squares didn't align well, they took a bit more care and were so proud of their next ...

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The only thing I did with scraps this week is to stuff them into my scrap bins.  I really need to get back into the habit f sewing with my scraps.  They are piling up again!

But a bunch of nice scrap quilts were finished this week for Many hands and Many Hearts so I thought I would share those.

I did sew up this soft flannel quilt top from some pre-cut squares sent in by Karyn.  I had some time to quilt something small on my longarm and this one was on the top of the pile.  The backing ...

Oh Scrap! : Pre-Cut Flannel from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I always enjoy opening all the packages that you guys send me.
I never know what I am going to find!

Last week, Karyn sent me a box filled with some pre-cut squares and some pre-cut flannel rectangles.
I was instantly inspired with the flannel pieces.  There were two different sizes but they all seemed to be the approximately the same measurement on one size.

The first thing I sewed together was this simple little infant quilt.

The next little quilt top I made; I ran the blocks vertically.  I am not sure if all the pieces were a consistent ...

Oh Scrap! : Found Squares from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been trying to organize some of the scraps that are donated to Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Right now they are just in bags and in big tubs.  They are never going to get used if they continue to be stored this way.

As I was going thru some bags, I found some 4.5" squares that were already cut to size.  I decided to use some of my solid scraps to cut some 1.5" x 4.5" strips to sew on one side.  I have been sewing them as a leader/ender all this week.

Hopefully ...

Oh Scrap! : Nada from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I don't have anything scrappy to share with you today.  I think the only scraps I touched this week were a few that I made and had to try and stuff into my scrap bins.

But I did do a lot of other exciting things this week. Hopefully I will have exciting news to share with you soon.

So today I will share my friend Penny's scrap quilt with you.  I guess it isn't really made from tiny scraps.  But is it made from leftovers from previous projects.  Like me, she has been cleaning her stash out ...

Oh Scrap! : More Squares from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week most of my time was spent longarm quilting and sorting fabrics to make kits for volunteers.  I did find a bit of time to cut more 44.5" squares from my scraps.

This box is about 12" deep so there are a LOT of squares in their already.  I have had a few people ask me exactly how many quilts I am planning on making. (It will be a lot!)

I did sew up a couple more sample blocks for this project.  The first quilt will be monochromatic and have a black center square.  There are some non-quilters ...

Oh Scrap! : Still Cutting from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Happy Scrappy Sunday!

I am still pulling large scraps and cutting 4.5" squares from my color bins.  Above is what I cut this week.  On the right is about a 10" high stack of cut squares and on the left is scraps I have trimmed to 4.5" wide.  Now I just need to chop them into squares.

This project seems never ending!

*********************************************

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

  • This linky party is for any scrappy project - It can be in-process or a finished piece ...

Oh Scrap! : Strings from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I had a few minutes to sew on Saturday, so I decided to get out the RWB strings and make a few more blocks.  I really wanted some mindless sewing!

In no time at all, I finished up ten more blocks.

I added them to my stack of blocks.  Some of these were sent to me and others I made along the way.
There are now a total of 52 completed blocks.

Plenty here to make a quilt.  Now I just need some time to decide on a layout and sew up the quilt top!

I also have a stack ...

Oh Scrap! : More Cutting from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I didn't think I spent much time on scraps this week but as I was organizing the quilts that were finished this week, I came across this little quilt.

I think I mentioned at one time, I have been going through all the flannel scraps to see what I could turn into quilts. I made all the nine patches a while back, but I did sew the blocks together and quilt up this soft little quilt.

I had this tan piece of flannel that worked perfectly for the backing.  Even the binding was made from some flannel leftovers.

I ...

Oh Scrap! Ta-Da from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week just seemed to zoom past.
I am feeling a bit frazzled this weekend.

I didn't get a chance to start any new scrap projects but I did get all the rows put together for my scrappy HST quilt.  I really like how it turned out.  the blocks were fun to make, and I didn't worry that the HSTs were all going one way.  I like how they go every which way in the quilt.

Now I just need to find time to quilt it.  Once it is completed it will go in the Many Mands and ...

Oh Scrap! : Rows Complete from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week, I had to spend a lot of time putting together kits for longarm quilters. It is a slow process because it usually means I have to prepare a backing too. But I made sure I found some time to advance my scrap quilt project.

I was able to get all the rows sewn on my scrappy HSTs quilt. Now I just need to press all the seams before I can sew the rows together. I am really happy with how this is turning out and am very motivated to finish it.

Maybe I will have a completed quilt ...

Oh Scrap! : Assembly Begins from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I spent most of the week assembling quilt tops and sewing backings for flimsies for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Now I have a nice queue built up to go on a longarm.

Really the only scrap quilting I did this week was to start to sew the blocks together on my scrappy HST quilt.  So far I just have the bottom two rows completed.  Hopefully next week I will be able to complete the top.

I have had a new distraction this weekend.  Meet Estelle.  Arthur and I went to meet her Friday and Saturday she came to our ...

Oh Scrap! : Gifted Panel Bits from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I was digging around in the panel bits and scraps gifted to Many Hands and Many Hearts and came across some fun things.  I have been needing to make a teen appropriate quilt and this should fit the bill.

Here are the bits as they came.

The first step was to get everything all trimmed up so I know what I have to work with

.

I then pulled some matching large chunks that needed using up.

I then started making some colorful strips.  I know I want the quilt about 55" wide so I initially cut all the strips roughly ...

Oh Scrap! : Orange HSTs from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I found a little bit of time this week to make the last blocks I need for my scrappy HST project.

These last twelve orange 6.5" HSTs will complete the corners on the layout.  Now I can finally sew up the quilt top and clear it off my design wall.  I am thinking I want to get out some of my orphan blocks and make a few donation quilts from them.  I certainly have an abundance of them!

Most of this week was spent organizing my old office into the storeroom for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  All the ...

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy HSTs from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Hurray!  I finished up the last 12 scrappy purple blocks I needed for my scrap quilt.  These blocks measure 6.5" square.  Next, I need to make 12 orange blocks to finish up the quilt top.  It will be nice to get this one off of my design wall.

Boy, I sure must have whined a lot about having to make bindings.  When I got my packages this weekend, the first box I opened had all these lovely, prepared bindings from Jen.

Then I opened the next box and found these scrappy bindings from Anne.

The third package I opened ...
